I haven’t been blown away by the rye beers that I have tried, but the addition of rye to this highly hopped IPA added mind-blowing complexities to this fine brew. RYE MALT INFO: Characteristics Rye is a light grain that can be use in a small part of a mash to provide a unique spicy, fruity, refreshing flavor.
Serving Type: 12oz. Bottle
Appearance: Dark red from the rye and possibly some caramel malts. A nice tan
almost brown head with fine bubbles. Moderate carbonation.
Smell: Really nice spiciness from the hops and rye malt, citrusy and floral
hop aromas, and surprisingly not much esters of alcohol.
Taste: Initially the beer was quite hoppy with only moderate balance from the malts.
However, once the beer warmed up a bit an amazing amount of flavors burst out of this
well crafted brew. The hops became more piney than citrus, along with the spicy
components from the rye came some perceived floral notes from the hops.
Also, the malts really balanced out the 90+ IBUs
and have an added appreciation to all the hard work that the brewers at Bear Republic
put into this beer. Lastly, the malts contained: caramel, brown sugar, and biscuit.
Mouthfeel/Drinkability: The mouthfeel of this beer was surprisingly nice and
medium i.e. not syrupy like other double IPAs. While this beer was quite hoppy,
when it warmed up it was really drinkable.
Final: 8/10 a nice hoppy treat. A must try.

HopRod Rye is one of my favorites. The rye adds a “bite” that is very pleasing. For hopheads, this is a must try. The brew pub in Healdsburg is also a fun place to have a bite to eat while having a couple of pints. My spare frig always has a supply of HopRod, Racer 5, and Red Rocket from Bear Republic.
