Compared to American India Pale Ales (IPAs), English-style IPAs do not have as much of a “hop-kick” to them. However, they do not usually lack in balance and complex flavors. Goose Island Brewing co.’s IPa is no exception. From the first sip I was blown away by its balance and wealth of citrus and biscuit/caramel flavors. I haven’t been disappointed by any of the Goose Island beer that I’ve tried so far, although some may have not been worthy of my “favorites list”.
Appearance: One finger foamy/soapy head, nice and carbonated, light golden color which is typical for the style, great lacing but not too much head retention.
Aroma: Nice sweet citrus hop notes along with honey, biscuit, and light caramel flavors from the malts. Definitely became more inviting as the beer warmed to the higher end of the suggested serving temperature of 45-50F.
Taste: A rush of orange and grapefruit hops flavors with a not too intense bite. A great malt back bone of bready biscuit, caramel, and a touch of honey. Well balanced. The aftertaste had some pine, but the bite didn’t last as much as most American IPAs. NOTE: The Goose Island website is the one who classifies this beer as an English IPA.
Mouthfeel: Clean but creamy mouthfeel. On the light side of medium body with medium carbonation which is pretty active in the mouth and contributes to the refreshing and sessionable nature of the beer.
Drinkability/Overall: A great and balanced IPA. If you’re looking for a ballsy hop-bite you won’t get it here. However, if you’re looking for an IPA that is balanced and full flavored then this one will work. I could see myself drinking 2-3 12oz bottle in a session.
